🌺 Book Review Alert! 🌺 Riveting and meaningful, Diary of a Prison Officer is undoubtedly an important read about a topic often not touched upon. This is a wonderfully important read to add to your bookshelves. Diary of a Prison Officer is a vital narrative in detailing the experiences of a Black woman during the early noughties. From both the overt and systematic racism she faces from her co-workers, to the more political events of 12 BNP councillors being elected, this is an important novel. It shows us not only have times changed so little, but also that there is so much more that non-Black people can do to change things for the better. The story is told in a divided timeline, between Amber’s time as a Prison Officer and her time backpacking in Africa. This made for such a well-rounded reading experience, and I really loved reading about the reflections that Amber makes about the former time during the latter. Amber’s search for identity and belonging on her travels makes for a meaningful contrast to the life she lived whilst working in England. But overall, Channer’s writing style in general makes for a really smooth read – something that I really appreciated given the changes in timelines. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to gain a new perspective on a topic that is not talked about often enough – even more so if you want to support and uplift Black writers and their stories! 🌺 Book Review Alert! 🌺 Jacobites, murder and mystery abound in The Slaughter of Leith Hall, making for the perfect historically themed suspense novel. And honestly – what’s not to love in it? This novel will have you on the edge of your seat. The Slaughter of Leith Hall follows Charlie Rob, manservant to John Leith. When his master is *spoilers* murdered in a supposed duel, Charlie finds himself on a journey for justice for his former employer. He, as well as the many other characters, make for an immersive and enjoyable read. There is also a character list at the beginning of the novel, making it a lot easier to keep track of the many supporting cast. Told in Scots and littered with slang, the novel really makes you feel as though you are on this mission with Charlie. Set just after the Battle of Culloden, this novel is perfect for any Outlander fans wanting to try out something different. And guess what? The Slaughter of Leith Hall is inspired by a real event! I really enjoyed reading about the world that Conyngham has created around this mystery, as I’m sure, will you. This novel will have you gripped to the very end. Filled with twists and turns, it’s sure to be a classic of Historical crime fiction in the future. Now onto see what else Conyngham has written! 🌿 book review alert! 🌿 Life After You by @msogorman Meet Milly – she’s a corporate lawyer, struggling with the loss of her father five years earlier. Her work environment is incredibly patriarchal, and she finds an unlikely friendship in her ‘Capricorn’ co-worker, Catriona. Along with the help of her best friend, Siobhán, Life After You follows Milly’s journey to overcoming grief and terrible boyfriends in an enjoyable and sweet read. This book is full of good stuff – there’s a lot of discussion of mental health, which I found to be touched upon very gently and respectfully. The frequent descriptions of anxiety and panic attacks were surprisingly accurate, and I found it helpful to read of someone going through the same experiences that I have. I wasn’t expecting this going into reading the novel, but I wholly appreciate it. I also found O’Gorman’s humour to be delightful to read. Although Milly’s boyfriend and his overcontrolling mum are admittedly vile characters who attempt to buy Milly’s love with money, O’Gorman writes about them in such a way that has you laughing at their ridiculousness, rather than hating them. This balances out the seriousness of the topics of mental health covered, which I loved. Another great thing about this book is the sheer level of detail O’Gorman manages to pack into it. Although Milly is our protagonist, the other characters are all fully fleshed out in a lifelike way that makes you feel as though you’re living in Ireland with Milly. This is a wonderful and surprisingly touching read – lighthearted and meaningful at the same time, I recommend it to anyone who loves Women’s Fiction. 🌺 Book Review Alert! 🌺 Hello friends! Today I bring to you a review of the wonderful 'Flowers I Never Picked Up' by @vmedleen. Admittedly, I’m not a huge poetry reader, but Flowers I Never Picked Up is a charming exception. Daka’s self-released collection is an enchanting read – relatable yet managing to be poignant at the same time. It is self-described as a ‘whirlwind of thoughts’ and examines themes of teenage mental health in the best way possible. The strength of this book is definitely Daka’s prose. Their writing flows from the page in a melodic fashion, and they have a way of turning the simplest words into the most beautiful phrases. Here are a few of my favourite verses to give you an idea: everyone you bump into sees your warmth and falls into it,
drawn to the heat and to the light.
the brightness in the small smile you manage to give to anyone who
walks past. Monday Morning
people like me eat breakfast
as a celebration for waking up The Breakfast Special
Flowers I Never Picked Up
repressed memories
fail to rest in the roots of

The poems also flow nicely with each other – the ‘District’ Collection is a wonderful look at the reality of London life. Furthermore, the poems also work together as individual pieces. The overall feel of the book is very well put together and it is evident that Daka has put a lot of thought into this collection. Although this collection of poetry appears as though it might be light-hearted and delicate, this is actually an incredible examination of mental health. I felt incredibly blessed to be able to gain an insight into this part of Daka’s life – I know that as a Poet, they will go far.
