Chidera Eggerue’s What a Time To Be Alone: The Slumflower’s Guide to Why You Are Already Enough is a wonderful new addition to the self-help genre.
Publication Date: August 2018
‘In What A Time To Be Alone, The Slumflower will be your life guru, confidante and best friend. She’ll show you that being alone is not just okay: it’s just about the best freaking thing that’s ever happened to you. As she says, ‘You’re bad as hell and you were made with intention.’ It’s about time you realised.
Peppered with insightful Igbo proverbs from Chidera’s Nigerian mother and full of her own original artwork, What A Time To Be Alone will help you navigate the modern world. We can all decide our own fates and Chidera shows us how, using a three-part approach filled with sass, wisdom and charm.’ – Goodreads
Let me begin by saying that this book is an absolute gem. It feels like fate that Chidera Eggerue’s work was given to me (literally posted through my door as part of my first Books That Matter subscription box) at exactly the time when I needed her wisdom most.
Eggerue’s work is like having an older sister affirming your self-worth when you need it. She instinctively knows how you’re feeling without having to ask; but what I loved most about this book is that Eggerue does not pity or patronise the reader. To have a victim mentality is addictive, she says ‘anything meant for us will work out.’ She’s also not afraid to call you out if you’ve been a toxic person: ‘honesty with self,’ she says, ‘is the best gift you can reward yourself with.’
‘”It” Doesn’t Really Get Better. You do.
Interspersed with Igbo proverbs learnt from her mother, Eggerue sets out to educate and encourage self-love in a time when social media preaches the opposite. In doing so, Eggerue perfectly mediates between therapist, teacher, and sister. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone in need of a friend.
Eggerue’s words of wisdom fit perfectly with the theme of this month’s Books that Matter box: self-love. Along with this book you receive a postcard, pin and a ‘self-care’ sloth sticker from Sugar & Sloth, as well as a tote bag to support the charity This is Our Period. The perfect box to receive during the season of giving!
